Introduction of Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is Thailand’s Principal Northern city. It is the second largest metropolis in the country, next to Bangkok. The word "Chiang" means walled city and "Mai" means new. This "new city" was created in the fertile valley through which runs the river "Ping". Mountains surrounding Chiang Mai from lower extremities of Himalayan foothills and host several hill-tribes of Tibeto-Burman origin. Geography of Chiang Mai Situated between North latitude 17-21 and East longitude 98-99, the province of Chiang Mai is found in the upper area of Thailand’s Northern region. The distance from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is 750 kilometres (468.75 miles). Chiang Mai valley is 310 metres (1027 feet) above sea level and its land covers 20107 square kilometers. The widest point of the province of Chiang Mai measures 136 kilometres (85 miles) and the longest 320 kilometres (200 miles) Climate in Chiang Mai Chiang Mai has 3 seasons: Cool Season, late October to end of February. Average temperature is 21 degree Celsius and colder at night. The coldest months are December and January. Hot season, early March to the end of May. Average temperature is 29.9 degree Celsius. The hottest month is April. Rainy Season, early June to the end of October. Average temperature is 25.5 degree Celsius. September is the month that it rains a lot. History of Chiang Mai The city of Chiang Mai was found in 1296 by King Mengrai, Prince of Chiangsaen. Chiang Mai became the capital of "Kingdom of Lanna" (Lanna means a million ricefields). In 1556, it was conquered by Burmese force and remained a Burmese Vassal State until 1775. At that time it was liberated by King Taksin of Siam (now Thailand) and it once became a Siamese dependency. From 1775 to 1938, Chiang Mai was ruled by Local Princes, as a vassal of the Kingdom of Siam. The last hereditary prince, Chao Kaew Navarath died in 1938 and had no successor. King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5) of Siam took over the administration of Chiang Mai. In 1949, Chiang Mai was officially recognized as one of the province in Thailand until now.

Half-Day to Doi Suthep Temple / Meo Hill-Tribe Village Time: 08.30 a.m. - 12.00 p.m. or 01.30 p.m. - 05.00 p.m. Inclusive : Transportation, English speaking guide, and entrance fees. Doi Suthep Temple is the most sacred temple containing the holy relic of The Lord Buddha. There is a popular saying that those who go to Chiangmai without visiting this temple are no better than those who have never been to Chiangmai at all. A panoramic view of the city can be seen from here at 1,250 meters above the sea level. The final climb to the sanctuary made on foot up a specially steep staircase guarded by seven headed Nagas and surrounded by fir trees. Sunlight filters onto the 306 old steps. |
